DEATH OF HERBERT MOODY DeLONG

Herbert Moody DeLong, 69, retired farmer of Brooklin, who resided at 71 Albert Street, Oshawa, lost his life Saturday night (Oct. 11) because he attended a sale at Uxbridge.

Absence of an adequate bus service on the Uxbridge-Port Perry Highway made it necessary for Mr. DeLong to look for a ride home. While standing on the road, he was offered a lift by Edward Armstrong, 1834 Danforth Avenue, Toronto, driving a taxi. According to Provincial Police, the car was travelling along No. 7 Highway at the northerly limits of Bronklin when it failed to make a sharp curve. The car was travelling south at the time.

Hurtling off the road, the taxi crashed into a telegraph pole, snapping it off, made four complete somersaults, and came to rest on its four wheels. Armstrong climbed out unhurt, but his passenger had been thrown out of the vehicle and his injuries were so serious he died before reaching a hospital.

The driver was arrested by Constable Gordon Keist and released yesterday on $2,000 bail. Charged with dangerous driving, he will appear in Oshawa police court on Friday, Oct. 17.

Born in Brooklin, deceased attended the Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph. After graduation he became a well known farmer around Brooklin. He moved to Toronto for a time and five years ago came to Oshawa. While employed at Ajax during the war, he suffered a severe injury, resulting in a fractured foot. After recovering Mr. DeLong retired from active business.

The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James DeLong, the deceased was born at Brooklin, on September 19, 1878. He was married at Guelph in 1904 and came to Oshawa five years ago from Toronto, where he had retired after operating the Standard Cartage Company for 25 years. He is survived by his wife, the former Irene Smith; one daughter, Mrs. Howard Thompson (Alfreda) of Toronto, and four sons, Alfred of Ottawa, Leonard of Toronto, Ronald of Oshawa, and Gordon of Nelson, B.C. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Cora Stillwell of Uxbridge and Mrs. Jesse Porter of North Dakota; one brother, William of Fort William and four grandchildren.

The funeral was held from the Armstrong Funeral Home at 2 p.m. today, followed by interment in Groveside Cemetery, Brooklin. The services were conducted by Rev. A. D. Cornett, minister of Simcoe Street United Church.
