DEATH OF REV. JOHN J. REDDITT

With a deep sense of sorrow and loss we record the death on Saturday morning last (Dec. 19) after a somewhat prolonged and painful illness of the Rev. J. J. Redditt, for the past eight years, assistant to the Book Steward, Dr. Briggs, an ex-president of the Toronto Conference, and a leader in the work of Canadian Methodism for many years. Mr. Redditt had not been well since July last but the serious nature of his trouble did not become known for some time after that.

Mr. Redditt entered the ministry in connection with the Methodist Episcopal Church in the year 1877, and rendered faithful and effective service in various fields with that denomination. With the union of 1883 he became a member of the Toronto Conference and spent the balance of his ministry in connection therewith. He had has fair share of honor and responsibility at the hands of his brethren, and was elected financial secretary, chairman of District, secretary of Conference, president of Conference and member of General Conference. In later years he was very active in the work of the Toronto Social Union, and gave much time and energy to the various phases of city mission work. At the time of his death he was secretary of the Hymn Book committee, and in the work of preparation, both of the Hymnal and Hymn Book, he has taken the keenest interest. He was a specialist in Sunday School work, and at various times was a member of different international committees.

In his work at the Book Room, Mr. Redditt was always keenly interested and gave to that work the best that was in him. He was specially interested in the adoption of labor-saving devices and in the mechanical department of the Book Room premises, and in these connections he rendered specially valuable service.

Mr. Redditt is survived by his wife, who will have the sympathy of the entire church in her sorrow and lonliness.
